Writing Workshop Week of 5/22/2022

The moderator for this week is Allegria Amata!

Allegria Amata: bio

Born in New York City and raised in a hamlet in the Catskill Mountains, Allegria Amata believes in the power of poetry to heal ourselves and our world. She appreciates writers with perspectives different from her own and tries to prioritize personal and social transformation over everything else--except maybe food! A dreamer and a doer, she is learning how to accept her own voice and listen to others' voices, especially the ones she has to make more of an effort to hear.

Tuesday

The prompt poem for today is The Book of Revelation by Morgan Parker

Allegria especially loves the elements of surprise in this piece, both in topic and in word choice. She brings up the idea that the "shine" people put on their social media posts can be toxically contagious, as much as covid!

One prompt she offers is to think of writing about the idea of believers versus nonbelievers. Another is to explore the idea of a tortured artist- does an artist need to be tortured to create art?

Thursday

The prompt poem for today is Only 4 the Righteous by Tupac Shakur

Allegria appreciates the warmth and honesty in this poem. The poem is broken into couplets, and most lines begin with a word in quotes that the rest of the line responds to or describes.

She poses the promt of using rhyming couplets, or a word in quotes on each line that the line responds to or describes. Another prompt is to come up with something playful, or the juxtaposition of playfulness with real-world violence (Shakur was shot to death at a young age). Another prompt is to figure out the rhythm of your own speech and to write a poem that "sounds" like you!

Friday

The prompt poem for today is “The Clean Rinse” by Naomi Shihab Nye

It's from a book called 19 varieties of gazelle.

Think about something currently or in the past where you have to give up something in order to gain something.
