1. Incorporate or respond to one of the following passages in your poem:
"if i could/be a tree, i'd know God is real"
"names burst my heart/to joyful smithereens with their bright seeds"
"o my god of negros/& foliage, roots & roots & roots, here we are/black & ashy & filtering air, ready/to be the forest, deliver us into an axeless world!"
2. Write a poem about a tree or trees. Some ideas:
a favorite childhood tree you liked to climb
a memorable forest you've hiked
your favorite tree of all time
expound upon some interesting tree trivia
write a poem about deforestation
describe an experience of planting a tree or watching one grow
3. Write a poem about the color green or the color brown, and explore their various significant meanings for you.
